Hello to all the Kindergarten and First Grade teachers I met at the Northern Alabama Kindergarten Conference in July! Below are listed a few resources on Glyphs. I will continue to add additional titles as I find them. Enjoy! Carol Gossett
Glyph Books
- Glyphs! Data Communication for Primary Mathematicians by Susan R. O'Connell, published by Good Apple #GA1573, for about $9. ISBN 1-56417-663-0
Glyphs are a kind of graph/coded picture. They start with a blank picture,
and then details are added according to how you answer questions. Here is an example:
Pumpkin Glyph
- Start with the outline of a pumpkin.
- Rule 1 Which kind of candy do you like best? If it is chocolate, make circle
eyes on your pumpkin. If it is candy corn, make triangles for eyes. If it is
licorice, make rectangles for eyes.
- Rule 2 What kind of Halloween stories do you like best? If you like scary
stories make a square nose. If you like gross stories make an upside down
triangle. If you like funny stories make round nose.
- Rule 3 How many books have you read this week about halloween? Make a mouth with one tooth for each book that you have read.
- When the glyph pumpkins are completed the students can trade and try to decode what the pumpkins represent. The possiblities are endless.
Gingerbread Person Glyph
- Start with the outline of a Gingerbread Person
- Rule 1 If you have a brother, give your Gingerbread Person red buttons. If you have a sister, give your Gingerbread Person blue buttons. If you have both a brother and sister, give your Gingerbread Person green buttons.
- Rule 2 If you have ever visited a forest, give your Gingerbread Person a feather.
- Rule 3 If you have ever visited the ocean, give your Gingerbread Person a bow.
- Rule 4 Dress your Gingerbread Person - use tissue paper if you like the spring/summer season best, use construction paper if you like the fall/winter season best.
