Domino Practice

Materials

Prior to the lesson duplicate one organizer board for each student.
  1. Using a set of double six dominoes, direct the students to spread them out, face down.
  2. Direct one child to choose one domino and to count the number of dots on one side. Tell them to take that same number of unifix cubes and to place them on the top of their organizer boards, in the left hand space.
  3. Tell them to count the number of dots on the second half of the domino and place the same number of unifix cubes on the top right side of the organizer board.
  4. Direct the child to state the number story. For example: two yellow cubes and (or plus) three red cubes.
  5. Tell the students to combine both sets of cubes in the bottom space of their organizer boards and to state the number of cubes.
  6. Tell them to now tell you the complete number story. For example: two yellow cubes and three red cubes is (or equals) five cubes all together.

Domino Pattern

Direct the student to build a pattern. Suggest that they remove one domino. Ask another student to find the missing domino to complete the pattern. There are two patterns represented in this picture. Can you find them? One on the top and another on the bottom! Click here for more lessons with Dominoes
