Focus
Sierra Bear Shapes & Positions is designed to give practice in mathematical skills such as, shape recognition and naming, pattern recognition, and position vocabulary. Language arts skills including left to right reading, a statement versus a question, and use of punctuation and capitalization are all components of this practice activity. Teachers of E.S.L. classes use this activity to teach vocabulary as well.
Vocabulary
The following is a list of math vocabulary covered in this activity:
- circle
- under or below
- square
- behind
- rectangle
- on top or above
- triangle
- inside
- oval
- next to
- hexagon
- in front of
Management
- Prior to beginning the lesson, decide whether or not you want to color the cards. Suggestion: If you color the shapes different colors, the students will practice color recognition and naming, however, may respond to the correct answers to naming the shapes based on the color rather than the shape itself. For example: I have Sierra Bear inside a red circle. Who has Sierra Bear next to a blue triangle? The student holding the correct response card may base the correct response to finding a red circle rather than finding Sierra Bear inside a circle. If the shapes are not colored, the student will need to search for the correct position and shape. Other Honey Pot Press exercise cards are designed to practice recognition and naming colors.
- If you do decide to color the shapes, be sure to follow your sequence carefully. For instance if you color Sierra Bear inside a red circle, be sure to color the same on the question and response card.
- Arrange the cards in a random order face down.
- For an additional activity, duplicate 10 of the large Sierra Bears on three different colors of bond paper.
- Arrange these colored pages of Sierra Bear in a pattern: ABC,ABC, (red, blue, yellow, red, blue, yellow).
- Keeping the color pattern in order, label these cards with another skill you may want to practice with your class. For example, the numbers in counting order of 1-10, skip counting with even numbers, 2,4,6,8,10, ”, odd numbers, 1,3,5,7,9, ”, A,B,C,D, E ”and so on.
- Once these pages are labeled, cut each one out and keep them in the correct pattern order; both the color and the counting or ABC pattern order.
- Using the I have, Who has cards which are already arranged in a random order, glue one bear to the back of each card. NOTE: At this time you want the I have, Who has cards out of the correct response order, but the large Sierra Bears, should be glued in correct order with two definite patterns, one of color and one of number or A,B,C order.
- Laminate the completed cards for extended use.
Procedure
The 10 Sierra Bear Shape cards can be used with a small group or in a whole class setting.
- Randomly distribute the cards to 10 students.
- Ask one student to move to the front of the class. Direct them to begin by reading out loud, the sentences on their card. For example; I have Sierra Bear inside a circle. Who has Sierra Bear next to a triangle?
- Someone will be holding the only correct response card in the group and should join the first student at the front of the class. Direct this child to stand right next to the first and to respond orally, by reading; I have Sierra Bear next to a triangle. Who has Sierra Bear in front of a square?
- These responses will continue throughout the group of ten students until the last one reads their card which will lead back to the beginning card. For example; I have Sierra Bear under an oval. Who has Sierra Bear inside a circle? When the first student responds to this last card, you will know that the exercise has come full circle.
- You should now have 10 students at the front of the class holding their I have, Who has cards. Direct these students to turn their cards over, showing the class the large Sierra Bears.
- Ask the class if these cards are in the correct counting order, A,B,C, order etc. (depending on how you labeled them). The answer will always be no. Ask the students holding the cards to arrange themselves in the correct order or ask the class to direct the students into the correct order.
- Once they have arranged themselves in the correct order, they will have also formed a color pattern with their cards (because of the way you labeled the cards originally). Ask the class to name the pattern formed with color as well as numbers or letters.
NOTES to the Teacher
- You can begin the exercise with any card and it will always lead back to the beginning card after 10 responses. Because of this design, the students will more than likely not memorize the order in which the questions fall and will need to sharpen their listening skills.
- To acquaint the students with the position and shape vocabulary prior to this exercise, you may want to order the Sierra Bear Shape/Position Vocabulary cards. This is a set of cards with Sierra Bear positioned with shapes. It is to be used as a flashcard or review card format to practice the vocabulary of position and shape.
- This exercise is one of several Honey Pot Press activities which can be used as a quick drill and practice exercise. Teachers use them with their opening activities with calendar, roll call, etc. They use them just before time to line up for lunch, recess, etc. They are great in a learning station to extend lessons in math and language arts.
- Once the students learn the format of I have, Who has, these exercises serve as quick reviews of several important concepts in one activity.
