MAT 902 Introducing Whole Number Subtraction
with Regrouping (Borrowing)
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. This course is designed for second and third grade teachers. The course focuses on subtraction with regrouping (borrowing). All of the manipulative materials and activities included in this class have been developed to provide teachers with concrete, pictorial, and abstract experiences in subtraction to help students construct an understanding of subtraction. The course consists of a special series of instructional materials, audio cassettes, games, and sets of diagnostic instruments that quickly and accurately confirm the needs and capabilities of each child in the class. This course is authorized by the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Assignments may be completed with or without classroom student participation. Register Online at Register
MAT 903 Teaching Place Value in the Elementary School
From Counting to Computation
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. This Teaching Place Value course was specifically designed and targeted for children in grades 1, 2, and 3 because the need for understanding the mearning of "Place Value" is so critical. Many small-group and classroom games and activities involving understanding place value are provided for the teacher enrolling in this course. The course is conducted by using mathematics and manipulative models emphasizing "carrying" and "borrowing". A complete Place Value Diagnostic Evaluation Instrument is also included in the course which will enable the teacher to determine the thoroughness of understanding of Place Value for each member of the class. This course is authorized by the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Assignments may be completed with or without classroom student participation. Register Online at Register
MAT 905 Teaching the Basic Facts of Multiplication and Division With Manipulatives
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. Teaching the basic facts of multiplicatoin and division with manipulatives is designed to provide teachers in the upper primary and middle grades (3rd through 6th grade) with replacement activities and manipulative materials that have been carefully sequenced for developing mastery of the basic facts of multiplication and division. Each of the activities included in the course package has been selected because of its contribution to the understanding of the operations. This course will enrich the teacher's basic mathematics program and will add meaning to the basic facts of arithmetic. (This course was developed by Larry Ecklund.) This course is authorized by the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Assignments may be completed with or without classroom student participation. Register Online at Register
MAT 907 Organizing the Learning Environment for Math Time
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. Designed for kindergarten and first grade teachers, the course materials include the book, Math Time, The Learning Environment by Kathy Richardson, a complete guide to scheduling, organizing and planning child-centered and appropriate math experiences. Also provided is a complete unit of study centered around the Gingerbread Man (over 150 pages of lessons and blacklines) that will supplement math programs in the content areas of counting, patterning, number recognition and naming, logic, telling time, money values, simple addition, and more. Each lesson is directly tied to specific, National Math Standards. Manipulatives and center games to practice basic math skills are another part of the course materials. Teacher friendly and practical assignments may be completed with or without student participation. Register Online at Register
MAT 908 Teaching Computation Methods of Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. This course focuses on the ways to teach multiplication and division computational methods and is thoroughly presented in a "tight sequence" moving from the concrete, "hands-on," manipulative forms to the abstract forms of computation (paper/pencil). Many replacement lessons are presented for teachers of grades 4, 5, & 6. This course is taught via audio-cassette tapes, illustrations, games, and detailed lesson activities. Classroom-tested materials, games and activities are included in the course. (This course was developed by Larry Ecklund.) This course is authorized by the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Assignments may be completed with or without classroom student participation. Register Online at Register
MAT 909 Problem Solving in Primary Grades with Attribute Logic Blocks
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. This course presents an early introduction to problem solving using manipulatives. A set of 60 colorful plastic Attribute Logic Blocks and many other "hands-on" activities are included with the course materials. The emphasis of the course is on developing concepts of logic and problem solving employing attributes of shape, color, size, thickness, and numbers. Attribute problem solving activities and games focus on the development of classification schemes and systems. Teachers are also supplied with a variety of more than 100 carefully selected attribute and classification problem-solving tasks for students to experience individually, in small learning groups, or with the whole class. (This course was developed by Larry Ecklund.) This course is authorized by the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Assignments may be completed with or without classroom student participation. Register Online at Register
MAT 910 Math Manipulatives I
Course Instructor, Carol Gossett. This course has been created to provide teachers with manipulative materials and replacement lessons that will enable them to teach mathematics more meaningfully. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommends that students learn math skills using concrete manipulatives in problem-solving modes. This course is designed to supply teachers with application and replacement lessons and includes the hands-on manipulative materials needed to integrate this course into the teacher's own mathematics curriculum. Special volume price purchases have been instituted to keep materials fees below the $90.00 that they normally cost. The lessons are organized into math strands including: number skills, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. Lessons are also included that have been correlated to the sequence in this course to assist students in the application mode of learning concepts and skills of mathematics and science at the concrete, conecting, and abstract levels. This course is authorized by the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education. Assignments may be completed with or without classroom student participation. Register Online at Register
